About the author:

Living proof that "fifty is nifty", writer Eva Pasco maintains an active lifestyle. She channels her boundless energy by working out and jogging, all the while jostling story ideas in her mind. Ms. Pasco resides in southern Rhode Island with her husband and three cats.

I showered, towel dried, and rubbed China Rose lotion on my skin while damp.
When it came time to put on my face, I blended moisturizer with concealer to camouflage the indelible gray south of the borders. I took more time than usual rubbing gel into my hair to lift and flick limp locks into place. As a grooming finale, I sprayed China Rose fragrance in the air and stepped into the mist. As an afterthought, I pumped juice onto a cotton ball for tucking inside the cleavage of my bra. One for the road! When I finished dressing there was just enough time for me to round out my morning rituals by logging onto mistednotes.com.

I chose to preview Scent Nazi's thread, "All you Sixties Chicks: Share a Patchouli High Moment" simply because the topic reminded me of Bev and Frankie. Patchouli transported them to the forefront on sillage wafting Hippies, Bev's excessive behaviors, and Frankie's infatuation with the oil and subsequent curiosity about Angel with its earthy underlying note of patchouli lurking in the base. I sifted through the first replies before posting my own.

Texas10Gal: My then boyfriend and I made passionate love inside his old van where the aromas of patchouli incense and weed swirled around us.

FragileLily: Hitchhiking from Hartford to Woodstock. It was my last great adventure before I became paralyzed by a car accident.

Slim: A bad trip on LSD scared me straight and screwed my head back on. To think, I was so anti-establishment back then and lived in a commune for awhile. Today, I'm a successful lawyer for a prominent corporation.

Bluffer: Stoned trying to study for a psych exam in my dorm which always reeked of patchouli incense.

Rose Fiend: I was at a Jefferson Airplane concert where a stranger passed me a joint while Grace Slick sang "White Rabbit."

…Jefferson Airplane before they evolved into Jefferson Starship, then Starship, and thus far, Jefferson Starship the Next Generation. I was a freshman at Rhode Island College, sitting on a bleacher inside Walsh Gym when I passed on that joint to the guy sitting next to me without taking a hit. Not one transgression. Before I logged out, I read the post added beneath mine.

Bluffer: Hey, for your enlightenment, a Jefferson Airplane is a used match bent to hold a joint smoked too short. Trust me, I know from experience.

Live and learn…Locking up the house, I was about to test my wings the way Chump did when Aunt M liberated him from his cage. I felt calm knowing my two cats dozed on the bed. Vestiges of patchouli incense followed me to my car. I was tripping on an optimistic high that the day's venture would amount to more than chasing rabbits and grant this Baby Boomer a second act to feed my head.

An Interview With Author, Eva Pasco, July 30, 2007...

1. What is the significance of the title Underlying Notes?

Underlying notes are the resilient notes that reside in the base of a fragrance. These notes linger long after the top notes and the heart notes evaporate to provide depth and stability to a fragrance. My title is also a metaphor for the inherent traits so deeply embedded in the bedrock of one's character which transcend mere surface beauty. The reader will discover other implications in a story as multilayered as the fragrances Carla indulges.

2. How does your novel appeal to the baby boomer generation?

Confetti falling from the sixties is strewn along Carla's journey to find her own groove: fishnet stockings, the Beatles, Viet Nam protest songs of the era - citing just a few. Most importantly, readers can identify with Carla, a gal over fifty, who voices anxieties, obligations, and concerns of the boomer generation. Her vitality and capacity for romance are not diminished by the passage of time. She affirms that life begins anew after fifty in the quest to reinvent herself. Carla appeals to the vibrant boomer's sense of adventure, while grounded in reality. You won't find Carla Matteo scaling mountain peaks!

3. What impact, if any, does the setting have on the story?

Set in Rhode Island, Carla's self-depracating wit and candor navigate the reader past it's affluent coastal communities, prominent landmarks, and cherished institutions. Vividly described, they are an itegral part of her spiritual journey. Carla's geograghical and historical perspectives offer the unvarnished truth and are a tribute to her keen insight.

4. What keeps the reader turning the pages of Underlying Notes?

Calluses of secrets that create their own subplots and tension between characters slough off one fleck at a time to expose the underlying truth.

Eva's Message to our Boomer community:

As the holidays draw near, it is only proper and fitting that I enclose a message of thanks. I'm thankful for Joanie's friendship and the prominent guest spot she has provided for me on "Fifty is Nifty." I'm thrilled to see many of my friends from My Space who have also become proud boomer members of Joanie's comprehensive website... a patchouli high for sure! I'm grateful for the support and encouragement I receive on a daily basis for my debut novel, UNDERLYING NOTES. An exercise enthusiast who jogs on the treadmill, I am now running a marathon to line up author interviews on radio and newspaper, as well as procuring book signings at the local bookstores.

As I've developed close friendships on My Space, many of you have expressed the desire to acquire a signed copy of my book.
