Hello once again from Joan Whitehead, your personal Fifty Is Nifty Beauty and Fragrance Advisor!
Below is a picture of me back at the Estee Lauder Counter...

Taken in 2002 with two of my beauty advisors, Sue and Pam (I'm on the right) Our store received the Estee Lauder "Counter Of The Year" award in 2002!
Yes, I am a former Estee Lauder Counter Manager, and received my certification from Estee Lauder as a "Certified Fragrance Specialist". I spent many years advising other Boomers about fragrances from the Estee Lauder Counter I worked at in Minnesota. Although I am no longer affiliated with Estee Lauder, the work experience and knowledge I acquired during my employment, have given me an ongoing interest in fragrances.
The Wonderful World Of Fragrance!
Every good fragrance is a complex composition of various ingredients uniquely created with the greatest attention to detail. Perfume is described with a musical metaphor as having three 'notes', which together produce the harmonious chord of the scent. The notes unfold over time, with the immediate impression of the top note leading to the deeper middle notes, and the base notes gradually appearing as the final stage. These notes are carefully created with knowledge of the evaporation process of the perfume.
They are composed of 3 levels, – top notes, middle notes, and base notes – with each level evolving to the next one as the fragrance blends, giving you a whiff at each level...
Top Notes:
Being the lightest and most volatile, it is what the fragrance initially bursts open with to create its first impression. It is what you smell immediately after the fragrance’s first contact with your skin. Top Notes are usually light and bright fruity or citrusy scents.
Middle Notes: The fragrance then gradually develops and gets richer with the Middle Notes which are usually florals or spices. Middle Notes are slightly heavier and less volatile as compared to the top notes and tend to stay around a little longer. They are thought of as the “heart” of the fragrance.
Base Notes: The fragrance then graduates into the Base Notes (musks, woody notes), give the fragrance its signature. Since they are the heaviest, the Base Notes tend to leave the longest lasting trace on you. More about Fragrances... Our sense of smell is one of our most powerful senses, and the use of various fragrances to influence the human psyche and emotions has a long and rich tradition. Some scents soothe, while others entice and excite, or jog memories of times or people in our past. While most other mammals are satisfied with their "default" pheromones, humans have found inventive ways to concoct their own scent potions to suit their moods, image and olfactory preferences. Scent is a highly personal thing, and while not everyone agrees on what does or does not smell pleasant and worthy of adorning our bodies with, perfume is a timeless accessory that can help express and affirm who we are, or even who we aspire to be. Enter and explore the wonderful world of fragrance!
A Brief History of Perfume...
Perfume is a mixture of fragrant essential oils and aroma compounds, fixatives and solvents, used to give the human body, objects, and living spaces a pleasant smell. Perfumery, or the art of making perfumes, began in ancient Egypt but was developed and further refined by the Romans and the Arabs. Although perfume and perfumery also existed in East Asia, many of the fragrances were incense-based. Today, French perfumes account for a substantial share of world perfume exports. The real perfume capital in France is not Paris but Grasse, on the French Riviera, where for centuries, roses, jasmine, lavender, irises and mimosa have been grown along with aromatic plants to extract their essences.
Perfume Today...
The precise formulas of commercial perfumes are well-kept secrets. However, connoisseurs of perfume are extremely skillful at identifying components and origins of scents in a fragrance. In the industry, the job of composing perfumes that will sell is the responsibility of the "perfumer", also sometimes referred to as "the Nose" due to their fine sense of smell and skill in scent composition. The perfumer is effectively an artist who is trained in depth in fragrance aesthetics and who is capable of conveying abstract concepts and moods with fragrance compositions. At the most rudimentary level, a perfumer must not only have a keen knowledge of a large variety of fragrance ingredients and their smells, but also be able to distinguish each of the fragrance ingredients whether alone or in combination with others. They must also know how each ingredient reveals itself through time in combination with other ingredients.
Today perfumes are produced by a great number of artisan and designer houses, as well as by independent producers and larger corporations. Perfume is often an addition to a fashion house's label, and the trend of celebrity-endorsed scents continues to rise at a rapid rate. Celebrity perfumes generally do not have the staying power of classic fragrances, though some lines continue to expand and have enjoyed great success thus far, such as the Jennifer Lopez-endorsed "J Lo" collection by Coty. There has also been an increase in popularity of made-to-order, customized scents, with fragrance blending services available to online or onsite customers.

A special treat for my Boomer Beauty friends and fragrance-lovers! Enjoy a special opportunity to view a book excerpt from an exciting new Romance/Women's Fiction Novel, to be released by Charles River Press, Inc. in December 2007... Underlying Notes by Eva Pasco is a post-menopausal coming of age haunted by fragrance. The "juice" offers incentive for Carla Matteo to find her own niche in the Second Act of life, while the ominous rose note in Paloma Picasso forces her to confront a troubled past.
